Officiate the game
Every tournament runs on its officials. There are two roles – and both have a clear certification pathway that takes you from your local club all the way to international events. It’s a great way to stay in the sport, travel, and give back.
At the table
Umpire
Umpires run the individual match – calling the score, the service action, and the rules, one table at a time. It’s the best first step into officiating, and anyone in Canada can take the entry exam online.
Running the event
Referee
Referees run the whole tournament – the draw, the schedule, and every decision above the umpires. It’s the senior officiating role, built on strong organisation and rules knowledge.

The first step, Club Umpire, is an open-book online exam you can take from home. No experience needed – if you know the game, you can start officiating it.
