The referee pathway.

Referees run the whole tournament – the draw, the schedule, and every decision above the umpires. The pathway builds from local events to the international stage across four levels, each with a course, an exam, and hands-on practical work. Tap any level to open its details.

Every level pairs a course and exam with real practical work – building actual draws and schedules for competitions.
One seminar.
The Complete Referee Seminar covers all levels – you attend and write the exam for the level you're ready for.
Grow into leadership.
Higher levels run jury meetings and act as deputy referee at major events, on the way to international.

Level C
Local / Club
Local competitions
▾

The starting level – enough to run a local or club competition end to end.

Course
A one-day course (about 4–6 hours), part of the Complete Referee Seminar.
Exam
A written exam of up to one hour.
Practical
Prepare the draw for a local competition and submit the result to a TTCAN representative within three days.

Level B
Regional / Provincial
Provincial events
▾

Step up to running provincial and regional events, with more demanding scheduling and a jury role.

Course
A two-day course (about 10–14 hours).
Exam
A written exam of up to one hour.
Practical
Prepare draws and time schedules for provincial/regional events (on two occasions), following ITTF rules, and run a jury meeting where expected.
Good to know
You have three years to complete the practical, or the level is held at C.

2-day course→Exam→Practical (×2) + jury→Level B Referee

Level A
National
National championships
▾

The senior domestic level – running national championships and acting as deputy referee at major events.

Course
A 2.5–3+ day course (about 18–20 hours).
Exam
A written exam of up to 2.5 hours.
Practical
Run jury and officials' meetings, and serve as deputy referee at a top-level tournament – preparing draws and time schedules under the referee's direction.

Referee national-level competitions across Canada.

International
International Referee
ITTF world events
▾

The top of the pathway – refereeing at international and world events under the ITTF.

Prerequisite
An experienced, active National Referee nominated toward the international level.
Through
The ITTF's international referee certification, supported by Table Tennis Canada.
You'll be able to
Referee international and world events.
Staying active
International officials keep their status through ongoing activity and evaluation.
