The umpire pathway.

Umpires run the match at the table. The pathway climbs from your local club to the international stage in four clear steps – and the first one is an open-book exam anyone in Canada can take. Tap any step to open its details.

The Club Umpire exam is open-book and can be written online – no experience or seminar required.
Climb by doing.
Each level adds a tougher exam plus real umpiring, tracked on a trainee card as you go.

National Umpires can go on to the ITTF international badges – White, Blue, and Gold.

Club
Club Umpire
Anyone – start here
▾

The entry point, open to everyone. If you know the rules of the game, you can start umpiring at club events – no seminar or experience required.

Who it's for
Anyone in Canada, including players who want to give back.
The exam
An open-book test (true/false + multiple choice, pass mark 75%) you can write online – about 2 hours.
You'll receive
A Club Umpire pin, an umpire kit (net gauge, toss coin, cards), and your trainee card to continue.
You'll be able to
Umpire matches at club-level competitions.

Register through TTSASK. A small fee applies (often free for cadets and younger). Ask the office and we'll point you to the exam.

Provincial
Provincial Umpire
Umpiring provincial events

The next level up – for club umpires ready to officiate at provincial competitions.

Prerequisite
Club Umpire certification and a completed provincial trainee card.
The exam
A longer open-book test (more true/false + multiple choice, pass mark 75%).
You'll receive
A Provincial Umpire pin, upgraded umpire kit and uniform, and a national trainee card.
You'll be able to
Umpire at provincial-level competitions.

National
National Umpire
Umpiring national events
▾

The senior domestic level – earned at a national seminar and interview, and the gateway to international officiating.

Prerequisite
Provincial Umpire certification and a completed national trainee card.
Format
A National Umpire Seminar (usually held at the National Championships) with a closed-book exam (pass mark 85%) and an interview.
You'll be able to
Umpire at all levels of events in Canada, join the national rotation list, and be selected for North American events.
Next
Two years as an active National Umpire opens the door to the ITTF international exam.

International
International Umpire
ITTF world events
▾

The world stage. Table Tennis Canada administers the ITTF international exam in Canada, and from there the ITTF badge ladder leads to the very top of officiating.

Prerequisite
A National Umpire for at least two years, active and registered with Table Tennis Canada.
The exam
The ITTF international umpire exam, administered by TTCAN (offered in even-numbered years).
The ITTF ladder
International Umpire (White Badge) → Blue Badge (Advanced Umpire Training + Advanced Rules Exam + field evaluations + interview) → Gold Badge.
You'll be able to
Umpire at international and world events.
